Some Sleep Benefits May Surprise You

benefits of sleep

LunaBed knows everybody needs sleep. Our bodies demand it day after day. Throughout human existence, sleep has been a bodily function that has affected all parts of our health and well-being, and has also been found to be crucial to normal daily brain function. Increased research is being done in all areas of sleep and sleep health. Many interesting findings have already come to light with more sure to follow. Here are a few examples of some of the known benefits sleep provides that you may or may not have heard about before:

1) Sleep Improves Memory

Even while asleep, your subconscious is at work practicing the skills you learned while awake. Studies have shown the sooner you fall sleep after learning a new task, the more solid your retention of that acquired knowledge will be.

2) Sleep Curbs Inflammation

A 2010 study found the C-reactive inflammatory protein associated with heart attack risk was higher in people who got six or less hours of sleep per night, than those who got more than six hours of sleep per night. Inflammation within the body causes health risks and is linked to heart disease, diabetes, arthritis, and premature aging.

3)
Sleep Spurs Creativity

Researchers at Harvard University and Boston College found people seem to strengthen emotional components of their memory during sleep, which ultimately helps in triggering the creative process. Before getting out those oils and brushes, take a quick nap!

4) Sleep Improves Athleticism

A Stanford University study found college football players who tried to sleep at least 10 hours a night for seven to eight weeks improved their average sprint time, decreased their daytime fatigue and increased their stamina over where they had been previously, with less hours of sleep.

5) Sleep Sharpens Attention

A 2009 study in the journal Pediatrics found that children between seven and eight years old who got less than eight hours of sleep a night were more likely to be hyperactive, inattentive, and impulsive. This behavior has the potential to result in ADHD and other similar diagnoses by child oriented professionals who would see this behavior as disruptive during normal, orderly settings like a school environment.

6) Sleep Controls Weight

Researchers at the University of Chicago found dieters who were well-rested lost more fat (56% of their overall weight loss) than those who were sleep deprived. The sleep deprived group lost more muscle mass. While the amount of overall weight lost did not fluctuate significantly between the two groups, the amount of fat lost was significantly more in the well-rested group. Dieters also felt hungrier when they got less sleep.

7) Sleep Reduces Accidents

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reported in 2009 that being tired accounted for the highest number of fatal single-car run-off-the-road crashes due to the driver’s performance. As it turns out, it is more dangerous to be a drowsy driver than even a drunk driver. This is an especially important reality to remember as sleep can mean the difference between life and death when behind the wheel of any motorized vehicle

8) Sleep Reduces Stress

In this high-speed world of juggling an increasingly monumental amount tasks, the stress of information overload, jobs, relationships and parenting can sometimes be overwhelming. Without a healthy sleep schedule, overwhelming can come knocking on a daily basis and eventually lead to more serious life-threatening ailments.
